12. Story: The Lost Dog
Read the story.
Yesterday evening, Alina was walking home from college. It was cold, and it was getting dark. She was listening to music and thinking about her homework. Suddenly, she saw a small dog near the bus stop.
The dog was standing alone. It was shaking because it was cold. It was wearing a red collar, but there was no phone number on it. People were walking past the dog, but nobody was stopping. The dog was looking at every person like it was waiting for its owner.
Alina stopped. She was not sure what to do. She was looking around and trying to find the owner. A man at the bus stop said, “This dog was running near the road five minutes ago. It almost ran under a car.”
Alina became worried. She called her friend Denis. While she was waiting for Denis, she was standing near the dog and speaking to it quietly. The dog wasn’t barking. It was sitting near her feet and looking tired.
When Denis arrived, they took a photo of the dog and posted it in a local chat. Then they called an animal shelter. The shelter worker said, “Please keep the dog safe. Maybe the owner is looking for it.”
An hour later, a woman called Alina. She was crying. She said, “That is my dog! His name is Max. I was looking for him everywhere.” When the woman arrived, Max started jumping and wagging his tail.
Alina felt happy. She didn’t plan to rescue a dog that evening, but sometimes the best things happen when you stop and help.
