Read: The Last Shift Of August
In August, Roma worked for two weeks in a small shop near his house. The work was not dangerous, but it was tiring. He carried boxes, cleaned shelves and listened to angry people. Some people were nice. Some people came in with a bad mood and spoke like Roma was not a person.
On Friday evening Roma finally got paid. He was tired, hungry and proud. His friend Denis wrote, “Come to the cafe. Everyone is here.” Roma wanted to go home, but he also wanted one normal evening before September.
At the cafe he ordered too much food. Then he paid for a friend because the friend said, “I will return it tomorrow.” After that Roma bought a taxi because the rain was heavy. At midnight he looked at his phone and saw almost no money left.
The next morning he felt stupid. He did not have a big tragedy, but he had a small adult lesson: after work, your brain wants fast happiness. Fast happiness can be expensive.
